Magic of the Frame Pilots NL

In both pilots in the Netherlands we choose to work with the movie “The Circle”

This documentary by choreographer and filmmaker Lanre Malaolu, is about growing up as a black boy in one of the social housing projects in Hackney, East London.

The short film portrays two young neighbors, the seventeen-year-old twins David and Sanchez Smith. They talk about their relationship, their family, the problems they face, their mental health, their dreams and other sensitive topics.

These topics were discussed in the first of the series of 12 lessons that are currently organized at the Hugo the Groot College in Rotterdam. At this school we work with an international class with students from Russia, Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan and other countries. All the world’s problems are present in a classroom of about 50 square meters. The group is motivated and but at times difficult to work with, but not because of their attitude. The main problem is the language, some of them have only been in the Netherlands for a couple of months, so parts of the lessons are in English. In the first lessons many theater exercises were used to address the subjects of the documentary. In May and June, the students will interview people who work for NGO’s, local politicians and activists on camera about the topics of the movie. The teachers Nadira and Cyrille have approached several organisations to arrange this.

“Magic of the Frame” at the HAVO voor theater en dans in Rotterdam

During a special study week, the students of the “HAVO voor theater en dans” in Rotterdam worked with the documentary the Circle. During one week, in groups of three, they tried to find subjects related to the movie in the neighborhood of their school and made short documentaries themselves. Because of the limited time it was a bit of a pressure cooker but the project was well received by the students and the school and will be repeated next year.

A documentary made by three girls about unsafety on the streets will possibly be broadcasted on TV Rijnmond the regional TV channel for Rotterdam and surroundings. One of the girls involved had a bad experience herself.

The Chrysalis and the Butterfly – Autobiographical Paths of Penitentiary Pedagogy,

De Portugese Vereniging voor Gevangenisonderwijs (APEnP) heeft deelgenomen aan een werkbijeenkomst met verschillende Europese organisaties, in het kader van het Erasmus+ (KA2) project, The Chrysalis and the Butterfly – Autobiographical Paths of Penitentiary Pedagogy, dat plaatsvond in ‘s Hertogenbosch (Nederland), in de maand april (2023).

Dit is een internationaal samenwerkingsproject voor innovatie en uitwisseling van good  practices, gebaseerd op een strategisch partnerschap tussen instellingen uit 7 landen, gericht op het delen van kennis, methodologieën en ervaringen op het gebied van volwasseneneducatie in gevangenissen.

Onder de activiteiten die tijdens deze bijeenkomst werden uitgevoerd, benadrukken we de deelname aan verschillende workshops over het gevangenisthema, het delen van ervaringen en good practices, en het gebruik van levensverhalen als instrument voor (zelf)kennis.

Als voorbeeld van het delen van methodes kregen we via ‘Living Library, een persoonlijk en intiem gesprek door het stellen van vragen, een inkijkje in het leven van ex-gedetineerde Toine Bakermans, een interessant verslag van zijn levensverhaal en criminele verleden. Toine Bakermans werd verschillende keren veroordeeld voor bankovervallen en bracht bijna 20 jaar van zijn leven door in verschillende gevangenissen.

Tijdens zijn laatste tien jaar gevangenschap besloot hij zich echter als autodidact aan de schilderkunst te wijden. In 2010 studeerde hij af aan de Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam. De lessen die hij leerde en de manier waarop hij zijn levenservaringen gebruikt in zijn werk, hebben Toine tot kunstdocent gemaakt bij De Nieuwe Kans, een instelling die zich inzet voor hulp aan risicojongeren. Over zijn werk bij De Nieuwe Kans werd in 2019 de documentaire Carrousel gemaakt, die werd bekroond met De Gouden Kalf.

Het bezoek aan Heilige Boontjes werd ook opgenomen in het werkprogramma als een waardig voorbeeld van een goede praktijk. Heilige Boontjes, in een voormalig politiebureau en nu een van de bekendste coffeeshops van Rotterdam, is opgericht door een politieagent, Marco van Dunnen, en een maatschappelijk werker (ex-gedetineerde), Rodney van den Hengel, die jonge ex-gedetineerden in dienst nemen om hun re-integratieplan uit te voeren (onder toezicht van de gemeente).

Tot slot hebben de delegaties die aanwezig waren op deze bijeenkomst in Nederland ook deelgenomen aan verschillende werksessies gericht op een laatste herziening van het handboek autobiografische methodologie voor gevangenispedagogiek. Als een van de belangrijkste producten is dit een handboek van goede praktijken, met bijdragen van alle zeven organisaties die deelnamen aan het project, dat een uitnodiging ontving voor presentatie in Syracuse (Sicilië, Italië), als onderdeel van het officiële programma van de ‘Archimedes Festiviteiten’ (29 juni – 2 juli).
